Changes to the Trademarks Act: what it means for your practice

  • 15 Apr 2015

2014 saw great change to Canada’s intellectual property landscape. Through passage of Bills C-31 and C-8, the federal government introduced sweeping amendments to the Trademarks Act designed to align Canadian practice with most other countries in the world, allow Canadians access to an international trademark registration scheme, and ensure that Canada meets its international trademark obligations under theSingapore Treaty, the Nice Agreement and the Madrid Protocol. The Toronto Intellectual Property Group is pleased to host Janet M. Fuhrer, who will review these amendments and the impact they are expected to have on trademark practice in Canada.

Janet M. Fuhrer is a partner with Ridout & Maybee LLP.  Janet’s practice focuses on trademark and copyright matters, pre-clearance of trademarks, trade names and domain names, preparing, filing and processing of trademark and copyright applications, representing clients in trademark opposition and cancellation proceedings and trademark and copyright litigation.
